The 20th century was a time of immense change, progress and turmoil in history. It saw two devastating world wars, countless social and political movements and the fastest technological advancement of any previous century. In short, it ushered in an era of unprecedented growth and development that changed the face of the world forever. One of the major events that shaped this century was World War I (1914-18). This four-year conflict began with an assassination and ended with massive casualties on all sides. The war introduced new technologies such as mustard gas, machine guns, tanks and airplanes to warfare for the first time. It also resulted in a dramatic shift in power among nations, resulting in Britain becoming one of the most influential countries on earth at that time. The war’s impact was felt around the globe as millions were killed or displaced from their homes due to fighting or famine. The Great Depression (1929-39) followed WWI as one of history’s greatest economic downturns. After a decade of prosperity leading up to 1929, businesses worldwide saw investments plummeting as a result of overproduction and stock market speculation gone wrong. As people began losing their jobs and life savings were wiped out, riots broke out around the world accompanied by extreme poverty for many citizens. The 20th century also saw dramatic changes within politics across Europe with leaders such as Adolf Hitler assuming control over Germany by 1933 through his Nazi party leading to World War II (1939-1945). This six-year war brought death on an unimaginable scale with both sides utilizing modern weapons such as nuclear bombs for total destruction against their enemies. Following this second global conflict came a Cold War between East (led by Soviet Union) & West (led by United States), which lasted until 1991 when Communism collapsed throughout Eastern Europe marking end to decades long ideological struggle between two superpowers. In addition to these world changing events during 20th Century History, this period also marked great advancements in technology from electricity being widely available across households & factories during industrial revolution to modern computer technology we have today due to internet revolution during late 90s & early 2000s which has made our lives easier & more efficient than ever before.
