The Soviet Union, also known as the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), was a Marxist-Leninist state that existed from 1922 to 1991. It was a one-party state governed by the Communist Party. The Soviet Union bordered Europe and Asia and spanned eleven time zones. It was the largest country in the world by surface area, comprised of fifteen republics which included Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Uzbekistan and others.The Soviet Union had an immense impact on global history in the 20th century. It was formed after the Russian Civil War when the Bolsheviks seized control of Russia in 1917 and declared a new socialist state with Lenin as its leader. After Lenin’s death in 1924 Stalin took power and led a period of rapid industrialization, collectivization of agriculture and central planning which turned it into one of two superpowers during World War II and afterward.The Soviets adopted a policy of peaceful coexistence with other countries while maintaining support for revolutionary movements abroad including Cuba, Vietnam and Angola among others. In addition they were heavily involved in international affairs through their membership in the United Nations Security Council, Warsaw Pact military alliance with Eastern European countries as well as their influence over International Monetary Fund (IMF) negotiations among others things. They competed against America for global influence during what is known as The Cold War which lasted until 1990 when it finally collapsed due to economic problems compounded by internal dissent from citizens who wanted greater freedom from government control . In conclusion , The Soviet Union impacted global history immensely due to its geopolitical position during World War II , its policy of peaceful coexistence , involvement in international affairs through UN Security Council membership ,Warsaw Pact military alliance with Eastern European countries ,influence over IMF negotiations . Despite its fall due to economic problems compounded by internal dissent from citizens who wanted greater freedom from government control it will be remembered for centuries to come .
