World War I was one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. It began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. The war was fought between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire) and the Allies (Britain, France, Italy, Japan and the United States). The trigger for World War I was a Serbian terrorist group called The Black Hand assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo on June 28th 1914. This event led to a series of declarations of war that soon engulfed Europe in total war. The conflict quickly spread beyond Europe as nations around the world joined either side or maintained neutrality. The Allies were eventually victorious after four long years of fighting with Germany signing an armistice agreement on November 11th 1918 which effectively ended hostilities. Over 65 million troops had taken part in this conflict with estimates placing fatalities at up to 10 million military personnel and 7 million civilians. World War I also marked a shift from traditional warfare to modern warfare with technologies such as tanks, airplanes and poison gas being used extensively during the conflict for the first time ever – leading to massive casualties on both sides. This war also had a major impact on politics across Europe as many empires were overthrown due to their involvement in this conflict – leading to their eventual collapse or dissolution following World War II some decades later Overall World War I was one of most destructive wars ever fought by mankind and its consequences are still felt today – politically as well as militarily – throughout Europe and beyond.
