She died before his Presidency, they had 2 kids that lived to adulthood, was very depressed when his wife died, never talked about her, burned all his letters from her

Neither candidate received enough votes so it went to the House, Burr becomes Vice President

The idea that the Supreme court had the final authority to determine if something was unconstitutional

Robert Livingston and James Monroe were negotiating buying New Orleans from the French. Livingston offered 10 million for New Orleans and then 15 million for all of Louisiana. We buy it without asking Thomas Jefferson. They violated strict interpretation but it was good. We also got the Mississippi River

Because it doubles our size, we gain more resources, and it was a great deal

To explore the new territory

Jefferson calls Lewis and tells him to get a team and go explore. Jefferson says he will give him all the money he needs. Meriweather Lewis brings William Clark

Clark brought his slave York who was treated fairly on the trip, they left in 1804 and got back in 1806, only one man died, they could not have done it without Sacajawea

Barbary pirates were taking things off of ships and capturing the soldiers, Jefferson refused to pay for protection and there is a war. Our small Navy goes over there and fights. We pay them, get a treaty, and it stopped.
