Many African nations became pawns of the Cold War as the U.S. and Soviet Union poured billions of dollars into them. Although this might sound like a good thing, many of the governments were corrupt and wasted the aid. In addition, the two superpowers were able to maintain foreign control of these governments in exchange for aid. Most of these nations have been ruled by military juntas that have little political understanding.
