Korean War

June 25, 1950.

The Korean War was caused because North Korea, China, and the Soviet Union all wanted the Korean Peninsula to be a communist area. Then North Korean troops marched into South Korea which set off the war.

The US got involved because they wanted to contain the spread of communism and they did not want North Korea to have full control over the Korean Peninsula.

General Douglas MacArthur was the leading general for American troops in the Korean War.

It took a lot for Truman to fire General MacArthur, such as when MacArthur wanted to push into North Korea to completely defeat the communist forces there. This scared Truman because he was afraid that China would see this as a threat and attack them, but MacArthur assured him it wouldn't and the Chinese ended up pushing back the Americans back into South Korea. He fired him mostly because MacArthur wanted to extend the war into other countries and to cause other problems without even considering the lives of the men fighting in the war.

July 1953.

The Korean War ended because the US, the People's Republic of China, North Korea and South Korea agreed to an armistice.

-The war created a fear in the United States, this also causes them to intervene in Vietnam to avoid another North Korea -allowed them to rearm and become a world power
