Effect: Russia's mobilization resulted in German to view Russia's mobilization as a declaration of war so on August 1, 1914, the German government declared war on Russia.

Effect: Great Britain steps in and declares war on Germany to support their alliance with France and Russia.

Effect: Ruined Germany's Schlieffen Plan, which was to avoid a war on two fronts with France and Russia. Surprisingly, Russia had already invaded Germany so German fought the French on the Western Front and The Russian's on the Eastern Front. A quick victory for Germany was not possible.

Effect: The Western Front became a Terrain of Death. For almost 500 miles, from North Sea to Swiss border, and the new tools of war did not end war sooner, it only killed greater numbers of people more effectively.

Effect: at first, Russia defeated some battles in Austria but eventually Austria pushed Russia out of Austria-Hungary. Germany counterattacked Russia in Tannenberg, Germany in a four-day battle, taking back East Prussia and drove Russia into full retreat.

Effect: Left Russsian army in constant need of food, guns, ammo, clothing, boots, and blankets. Russia had not industrialized like Europe so had to depend on supplies from outside of Russia.
