Expansion of an Empire through political, cultural, or economic means

Established in 1898 to combat the annexation of the Phillipines. They believed that territorial expansion was against American ideals of liberty and consent of the governed.

1899 poem by Rudyard Kipling. Expressed the issues of imperialism and the idea that the whites are responsible for caring for the other races.

1898 war between US and Spain. US interfered in Cuban fight for independence. Eventually led to US conquest of Guam, Philippines, and Puerto Rico.

1901 Supreme court rulings which decided that Constitutional rights were not immediately extended to the new territories. Constitution applies fully to incorporated territories (Hawaii and Alaska), but not to the others.

Navy Admiral, wrote The Influence of Sea Power Upon History. Discussed how a strong navy is necessary for expansion and security.

Created by John Hay in 1899. Referred to US foreign affairs. Aimed to keep China's trade with other countries equal by protecting treaty ports. Made to safeguard Chinese territory. Did little but create resentment between nations.

Democrat Secretary of State under Wilson. Anti-war, pro-prohibition, anti-banks. He wanted to put silver in the hands of the people. Known as the Great Conmoner.

26th president. Progressive republican, conservationist, led progressive movement. Fought in the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American war

27th president, Chief Justice republican, championed by Roosevelt, worked against corrupt business and sought to industrialize other nations through Dollar Diplomacy

Effort by the US to economically build up Latin America and East Asia through loans. Used mostly by Taft.

28th president, progressive democrat. President during WW1, passed Federal Reserve Act, Clayton Anti-Trust Act, among many others.

Ballots in which the choice of the voter is unknown, protects against poll violence and political machine manipulation. Most common form is voting booth.

1913 act which established the Federal Reserve, the central banking system of the United States. Passed by Wilson.

1914 act which added to the Sherman antitrust act of 1890. Attempted to stamp out anti-competitive businesses at the root.

First Chief of the United States Forest Service in 1910. Progressive republican who coined the term conservation ethic.

Ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote. Culmination of women's suffrage movement.A
