Sinhala Dynasties

According to Mahavamasa an ancient text in Sinhala, the establishment of the first Sinhala Dynasty happened in 543 c when Prince Vijaya was banished from the kingdom of Sinhapura by his father the king. He was accused of Misconduct from his violent ways .The prince along with his 700 followers arrived, at Puttalam, Sri Lanka. There Tambapanni the first kingdom was established, by defeating the inhabitants, the Yaksha. A Dynasty emerged.

Prince Vijaya reigned from 543 c to 505 c. The next king was his nephew panduvasudeva. The Dynasties to follow were Monarchs and lineages were hereditary. A pilgrimage from eastern India of Buddhism, was headed toward Sri Lanka. Once there Buddhist monks delivered a sermon to King at that time Tissa. Soon after the King embraced it the people did as well. Centers of Buddhism were built and Buddhism became a major Religon in the kingdom. Jainism, Hinduism and Christianinty were also practiced in Sri Lanka.

The Vijaya dynasty advanced until 165 CE when Vasabha founded the Lambakanna dynasty. THe dynasty ruled for for four centuries. The king at the time constructed multiple irrigation systems. The fall of the Lambakanna happened with an invasion from southern India.

Under new reign the Polonnaruwa dynasty was prosperous. Unfortunately under many kings the dynasties kings grew ineffective, In 1214 Kalingas invaded Sri Lanka and took control of the whole island. Polonnaruwa fell. Drastic economic and social consequences followed. Agriculture and the Population dwindled. The beautiful Sri Lanka became ruined.
