Anatomy I

Toward the front of the body. The sternum lies anterior to the heart.

Towards the back of the body. The heart lies posterior the sternum.

Above or on top of. The heart lies superior to the diaphragm.

Below or underneath. The diaphragm lies inferior to the heart.

Away from the mid line of the body. The lungs lie lateral to the heart.

Towards the mid line of the body. The heart lies medial to the lungs.

Away from the body surface

Towards the external surface of the body.

Nearer to the trunk of the body. The shoulder is proximal to the elbow.

Furthest from the trunk of the body. The elbow is distal to the shoulder.
