question
The prospect of territorial acquisition from the Mexican War spurred a political debate over the issue of extending slavery. Discuss the various solutions offered, as well as the impact of the issue on the election of 1848.
answer
With the acquisition of new territories, the question of whether or not slavery would be extended into those new territories became a very hot topic. Many northerners did not wish for slavery to be extended into the new territories, but many southerners saw the new territories as a great way to expand cotton production, so they did want slavery to be extended. The idea of popular sovereignty was considered, which would allow the territories to decide for themselves whether or not they would allow slavery. However, it seems that the best way to approach the subject, at least from a presidential election standpoint, was to simply dodge all questions related to slavery. This allowed Taylor to win the election of 1848 as he didn't upset either side like people such as Calhoun did. All in all, the decision of whether or not to allow slavery to expand into new territories was a huge issue at the time and a very difficult situation to navigate politically if your sole goal was to win the presidency.

question
Contrast the backgrounds, leadership styles, and effectiveness of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis.
answer
While they were born just 100 miles apart, Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis lived very different lives. Lincoln's family moved north where his father became a farmer and where he received his minimal education. Davis, however, moved south where his family became cotton plantation owners. Davis would eventually fight in the Mexican-American war and then serve on the US Senate. Davis's leadership style was very much hands on, which sounds like a good thing, but it was a bit too hands on and drove him to weariness. Lincoln also like to be hands on but was much better at delegating the work out to the right people as to not overextend himself. In the end, Lincoln proved himself to be far more effective than Davis in his presidency, but to be completely fair to Davis, you would be hard pressed to find a president that was more effective to than Lincoln.

question
Discuss how southern whites reacted to the emancipation of blacks during the period of Reconstruction.
answer
After the emancipation of the slaves, southern whites were not happy, to say the least. While many people were angry, the predominant emotion was fear. Their entire lives had just been turned upside down, and many did not know how they were going to survive without slaves as their entire livelihoods often times depended on having slave labor. In addition to this, they were also very afraid of what the newly freed blacks might do to them. Despite rarely occurring, many southern whites had great fears of being killed or raped by the free blacks. Naturally, they tried to get as much power back as they could and created the Black Codes, which were designed to limit the things that a black person was allowed to do or possess. All in all, the southern whites reacted about as one would expect them to react considering the shakeup that they had just experienced.
