Political party formed to go against Andrew Jackson; they were against the executive branch having too much power; Martin Van Buren was elected as a Whig candidate in 1836

sarcastic reference to GB anti-monarchy/pro-Parliament party. (against "King Andrew") suggest that Andrew Jackson did not hold the principles upon which the country was founded.

Reasons why Andrew Jackson opposed bank: 1. The ability of the bank to influence congressmen through loans 2. The ability of the bank over lending policies of state banks 3. The concentration of the bank's stocks in the hands of wealthy individuals in the Northeast and in Europe

Andrew Jackson opposed the national bank for many reasons. He found it corrupt and too powerful.

The Whigs were originally colonists supporting independence. In the mid 1830s, the Whig Party opposed Jackson's strong-armed leadership style and policies. The Whigs promoted protective tariffs, federal funding for internal improvements, and other measures that strengthened the central government. Reaching its height of popularity in the 1830s, the Whigs disappeared from the national political scene by the 1850s.
