The American Revolution

The Battle of Yorktown in 1781 marked the complete defeat of the British army in the American Revolution. The fact that Cornwallis placed his troops in a position with no route of escape was a major strategic blunder. Thus, the statement that because the British fortifications bordered the York River, it made it easy for the American and French forces to surround Cornwallis' army and secure victory is the best answer.

Baron von Steuben trained the Continental Army at Valley Forge. After his 1777 arrival in America, von Steuben was assigned by the Continental Congress to train the army, a task for which he had no formal training at that time. Steuben's program helped to prepare the ragtag Continental Army for battles against the well-trained British soldiers.

At the Battle of Bunker Hill, the colonists used the physical geography of the area to their advantage by firing on the British from a relatively safe position on the "high ground" of the battlefield.
