Immunology Quizzes

Immunology is a branch of medical science that studies the body’s immune system and its response to foreign substances, such as bacteria and viruses. It also studies how the body defends itself against infection and disease. The immune system is composed of various organs, tissues, cells, proteins, and other molecules that work together to protect the body from harm.Immunologists investigate how the immune system recognizes and responds to foreign agents. They study how the different components of the immune system interact with each other to produce an effective response against invaders. They also study how different treatments can help boost immunity or prevent diseases caused by weakened immunity. Immunologists may work in a clinical setting or in a research lab studying fundamental immunological processes like antigen recognition or cytokine production.Immunology has been used in diagnostics for years as it helps scientists understand what type of threat is present when a patient presents with symptoms that could be attributed to any number of diseases or infections. Molecular techniques are increasingly being used for diagnosis of infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria, but immunological tests are still important tools for detecting many types of infections including tuberculosis, hepatitis B virus (HBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), malaria parasite infection and more recently SARS-CoV-2 which causes COVID-19 disease.Immunology has also been applied therapeutically over recent decades through vaccines, which are designed to teach our bodies to recognize certain antigens so they can respond quickly should they encounter them again in future; this is called acquired immunity or active immunity. Other therapeutic applications include treatments designed to suppress or activate specific components of our immune system in order to treat autoimmune diseases (where our own cells become targets) or cancer respectively. Immunotherapy is becoming increasingly important due its effectiveness at treating several types of cancer including melanoma and lung cancer making it one of the most promising areas within modern health care research today.
