Compounds Quizzes

Compounds are substances that consist of two or more elements chemically combined in fixed ratios. The elements making up a compound cannot be easily separated by physical means, and the properties of the compound are totally different from those of its constituent elements. Examples of compounds include water (H2O), sugar (C12H22O11), and carbon dioxide (CO2).The atoms that make up a compound may be held together by covalent bonds, which involve sharing electrons between atoms; ionic bonds, which involve the transfer of electrons from one atom to another; or metallic bonds, which involve delocalized electrons shared among metal atoms. Compounds can also form between molecules, such as hydrogen bonding between water molecules.Compounds have many uses in everyday life. Water is essential for life on Earth and is used for drinking, cleaning, irrigation and many other processes. Sugar is used as an energy source in food and drinks, while carbon dioxide is important for photosynthesis in plants and helps to regulate Earth’s climate. Many medicines are also made from compounds including antibiotics such as penicillin and aspirin. Compounds can also be used as catalysts substances that speed up chemical reactions without themselves being changed in the process such as enzymes found in cells that speed up metabolic reactions needed to keep us alive. Compounds can also act as replacements for naturally occurring substances synthetic plastic polymers were developed to replace natural rubber which was becoming scarce due to over-harvesting. In summary, compounds play an important role in our lives; they are necessary components of all living things on Earth, provide energy sources for us and our environment and have many practical applications both today and into the future.
