They were told all of there sins would be forgiven and they would go straight to heaven when they died. Peasants got to escape their slavery. People hoped to get rich.

The Muslims were more united then them and Europeans decided America was an easier target.

It lead to the end of feudalism.

Free the Holy Land, help Christians in the Byzantine empire defend against the Selijuk Turks.

Expanded their trading markets. Brought new ideas because of contact with other countries. Classical literature was rediscovered.

1096 - 1099 The People's Crusade. Land route. People were inspired to go to war by preachers because of The massacre of 3000 Christian Pilgrims in Jerusalem. Captured Jerusalem setting up feudal estates temporarily.

1147 - 1149. Land route. Lost Jerusalem because of internal fighting.

1189 - 1192. Crusade of Kings. Water route. Led by French, English and German kings. King Frederick of Germany drowned in a river. Nothing was accomplished.

1202 - 1261. Water route. Mainly to recoup the loses the incurred for the other crusades. Ransacked towns.
