Ancient Greece was a powerful civilization that flourished from around 800 B.C. to 300 B.C. It was the birthplace of democracy, art, literature, philosophy, scientific thought and much more. The Ancient Greeks were responsible for inventing many of the things we take for granted today such as the Olympics, theater and even our alphabet. In terms of government structure, Ancient Greece featured several different types. These included democracy (where citizens had basic rights and could vote on laws), oligarchy (where a small group held power) and tyranny (where one person or family ruled). The most popular form of government in Ancient Greece was democracy which allowed citizens to participate in politics and make decisions about their communities. This system spread throughout the Mediterranean region and beyond, influencing other civilizations such as Rome and Egypt. The arts also flourished in Ancient Greece with great achievements being made in sculpture, architecture, painting and pottery amongst other things. Much of this artwork has survived to this day allowing us to gain insight into their culture through their various works of art including the statue of Zeus at Olympia or the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens. The Ancient Greeks were also pioneers in philosophy with leading thinkers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle making major contributions to our understanding of ethics and morality among other topics that are still studied today by modern philosophers. Finally science saw major advancements during this time period too; Euclid’s Elements is an example of how advanced they were in mathematics while Hippocrates wrote extensively about medicine establishing what would become known as Hippocratic Medicine’ which is still practiced today.Overall it is clear that Ancient Greece made huge contributions to world history that have shaped our culture today – from government structures to philosophy – making them one of the most influential civilizations ever.
