Characterization

The author tells the reader directly what the character's personality is.

When an author indirectly shows a character's traits. Can be shown by the characters speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions and looks. Indirect characterization requires a reader to make inferences about a character;s personality.

What the character says. It could be the character's accent(the sound of their voice) and word choice. Also, the way it is being spoken such as the character's tone of their voice.

What is revealed or shown through the character's private thoughts and feelings.

What is revealed through the character's effect on other people. How do others react to the character?

What does the character do, how they behave.

What does the character look like, how does the character dress? What is the character's body language and/or facial expressions?

Billy stated defiantly in front of the crowd, "I am more than just my looks. I will not allow myself to be judged by my looks and only my looks.

"Why does everyone think of me as if all I am is a pretty boy," thought Billy.

Whenever Billy walked in a room, everyone stared at him, for he was the most handsome boy in the world.

Billy wore the dirtiest clothes he could find, to see if people were only friends with him because of his looks.

Billy started wearing dirty clothes to school everyday.

Allie was so shy she never talked to anyone at lunch.
