Portuguese Language Quizzes

Portuguese is a Romance language that originated in what is now Galicia and northern Portugal. It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil and Angola, and is also spoken in Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, East Timor and Macau. There are also Portuguese speakers in Goa, India; Daman and Diu, India; and in Malacca, Malaysia. The Portuguese language has a rich history. It was first spoken by the Celtic Galicians who inhabited modern-day Galicia and northern Portugal. The first written records of the Portuguese language date back to the 9th century AD. By the 12th century AD, Portuguese had become a widely used language throughout Portugal and Galicia. In the 13th century AD, King Afonso III of Portugal began the process of reconquering the Algarve from the Moors. This resulted in an influx of Arabic words into the Portuguese language. In the 14th century AD, Prince Henry the Navigator began funding voyages of exploration which led to increased contact with other cultures and languages. This resulted in even more loanwords being introduced into Portuguese. The Portuguese Empire reached its height in the 16th century AD. During this time, Portuguese became a Lingua Franca – a common language used for trade and communication – in many parts of Africa, Asia and South America. As a result of this increased contact with other cultures, Portuguese continued to evolve and grow as a language. Today, there are over 200 million speakers of Portuguese worldwide. The vast majority of these speakers live in Brazil – where it is an official language alongside English, Spanish and French – but there are also sizable communities of speakers in Portugal (10 million), Angola (5 million), Mozambique (4 million) and Cape Verde (500 thousand).
