Romanian is a Romance language spoken by around 24 million people as a native language, primarily in Romania and Moldova, and by another 4 million people as a second language. It has official status in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Romanian is also an official language of the European Union.The origin of Romanian is unclear, but it is believed to be a descendant of Latin, possibly with some influence from Dacian or other languages spoken in the area prior to the Roman conquest. The first written evidence of Romanian dates back to the 15th century AD, but it was not until the 19th century that it began to be used regularly in print. Romanian has a rich vocabulary, with many loanwords from French, German, Slavic languages, and Turkish. In addition to its Romance roots, Romanian also has influences from Slavic languages, Albanian, Greek, and Hungarian.The grammar of Romanian is similar to that of other Romance languages. It has a subject-verb-object word order and uses articles (definite and indefinite), nouns (singular and plural), adjectives, pronouns (including reflexive), verbs (infinitive, gerund), adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions etc.
