The Russian language is an East Slavic language and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. It is the official language of Russia and is also spoken in other parts of Eastern Europe, Caucasus, Central Asia, and Siberia. Approximately 275 million people around the world speak Russian as their native language.Russian has a long history that dates back to the 10th century AD when it was first used by Kievan Rus’ which was a medieval state located in present-day Ukraine and Belarus. Since then, it has gone through many stages including Old Church Slavonic, Middle Russian, and Modern Russian which we use today. During its long history it has been influenced by many different cultures such as Germanic languages like Swedish and Danish due to trade contacts between these countries during different periods of time. The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters with a total of 10 vowels and 21 consonants making it somewhat easier for foreigners to learn compared with other languages such as Chinese or Japanese which use thousands of characters. The pronunciation of words can be difficult for non-native speakers but once you get used to it you will find that there are certain rules that make pronunciation easier such as how some consonants are softened when followed by certain vowels creating new sounds like sh” or “zh”.
