Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that examines the fundamental nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, object and subject. It attempts to answer questions such as: What is the ultimate nature of reality? What is a person’s true identity? How is knowledge acquired? Metaphysics has been an important part of philosophical inquiry since ancient times, but it was not until the 19th century that it became a distinct field of study. Metaphysics seeks to understand how our physical world relates to more abstract concepts like free will, consciousness and morality. It also explores how physical objects interact with each other and how they are ultimately connected in some way. The field has traditionally been divided into two main camps: realism (or ontological realism”) and anti-realism (or “anti-ontological realism”).
