To Kill A Mockingbird - Chapters 4-7 (Comprehension)

Scout and Jem find two sticks of chewing gum wrapped in tinfoil. Later on, however, they find two very old coins (Indian Heads) on their front porch.

Mrs. Dubose lived two doors up the street from the Finch's. Everyone agreed she was the meanest old woman who had ever lived. Jem wouldn't go near her house without Atticus with him.

Jem gets even with Scout for contradicting him about "Hot Steams" because when Scout gets into the tire, Jem pushes the tire as hard as he could down the hill. As a result, Scout is nauseous in the tire and both her and the tire land in the Radley's front yard.

The Boo Radley game was similar to a skit. Jem, Dill, and Scout would pretend to be the Radley's and they would act out rumors about them. Further into the game, Scout quit, however.

Mrs. Maudie was a person who lived on the Finch's street who loved to plant anything (except nut grass). She let them play in her yard, eat her scuppernongs, and explore her vast back lot if they didn't break any rules such as jumping on the arbor.

Miss Maudie thinks of the Radley's as very religious people, since Mr. Radley is a foot-washing Baptist.

Dill and Jem wanted to give Boo Radley a note because they want Boo to come out so Dill and Jem can ask him a few questions. In return, Dill and Jem would give him ice cream. When Atticus finds out about their plan, he says that they should all stop tormenting the Radley's.

Jem lost his pants because when the trio wanted to leave the Radley's yard, they had to go under some barbed wire. As a result, Jem got stuck on the wire and he had to take off his pants. When he went back for them, Jem found his pants stitched up and on top of the fence.

Jem and Scout found two soap bars with people engraved into them (Jem and Scout are the people), a full pack of gum, a ball of twine, a spelling bee trophy, and a pocket watch on a chain with a knife attached. There may have been many more items in the tree.

There would be no more surprises in the tree because Mr. Nathan Radley had filled up the knothole with cement. When Jem and Scout asked Mr. Radley why he filled up the knothole, he said the tree was sick. However, Atticus looked at the tree and it looked healthy, according to Atticus.
