South America is a continent located in the western hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It includes twelve sovereign countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname Uruguay and Venezuela. South America is home to people of many different ethnicities including Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The geography of South America consists of rainforests (including Amazon Rainforest), savannas and grasslands such as the Llanos and Pantanal; deserts such as Atacama Desert; mountains ranges like Andes; coasts on two oceans (Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean) and numerous rivers. The culture of South America varies greatly by region according to their respective histories. South America has been home to some amazing civilizations throughout its history including Inca Empire which ruled over parts of what are now Peru and Bolivia during early 16th century AD. There was also Chibcha civilization which created vast cities and had great political power in parts of what are now Colombia between 6th century BC until Spanish conquest 16th century AD. Other ancient cultures include Muisca people who were dominant ethnic group in Colombia before colonization by Spain began in late 15th century AD; Moche civilization that flourished along Peruvian north coast from 1st century BC until 7th century AD; Tiwanaku culture that flourished from 500 BC to 1000 AD around Lake Titicaca located between present-day Peru and Bolivia; Tupi-Guarani who were among first native inhabitants on Brazilian coast when Portuguese arrived there during early 16th century AD; Mapuche people who still live today in central Chile despite colonization attempts by Spanish conquistadors since late 16th century AD etc. In modern times South America has produced some great leaders like Fidel Castro who led Cuba through four decades after 1959 Revolution overthrew Fulgencio Batista’s government or Simon Bolivar who liberated much of Latin American territories from Spanish colonial rule during 19th century or Che Guevara whose heroic struggle against US imperialism still inspires millions around world today etc.. Today there are many challenges facing this region from economic inequality to environmental degradation but at same time it is also home to some amazing wildlife species (such as jaguars), beautiful landscapes (such as Iguazu Falls), unique cultural heritages (such as Machu Picchu) etc.. All these factors make South American continent an interesting place worth exploring for travelers looking for adventure.
