The Second New Deal

(1935) a new set of programs in the spring of 1935 including additional banking reforms, new tax laws, new relief programs; AKA the Second Hundred Days

employed 8.5 million Americans on public-works projects

a system for providing pensions, guaranteed regular payments, for many Americans age 65 and older

a collectio of smaller unions representing the interests of skilled workers

head of the United Mine Workers; led the CIO

broke away from the AFL

a strike in which workers refuse to work or leave the workplace until a settlement is reached

when a governement spends more money than it takes in

British economist; argued that deficit spending could provide jobs and stimulate the economy

outlawed a number of antilabor practices, like the creation of company-sponsored unions

given the authority to conduct voting in workplaces to determine whether employees wanted union representation

could loan money to farm cooperatives and other groups trying to bring electricity to people living in rural areas

gave tenants and sharecroppers a chance to buy land of their own
