A repeating disturbance or movement that transfers energy through matter or space.

Energy travels on a wave. The waves carry the energy along without transporting matter from place to place.

A wave is created by energy that is passing through.

A wave that can only travel through matter.

a. Transverse waves - Waves in which the medium moves at right angles to the direction of the wave. b. Compressional waves - Waves in which the medium moves back and forth in the same direction as the wave.

A sound wave is a type of Transverse wave.

Sound travels through a medium by pushing and pulling the atoms making up the medium as it moves through.

The motion of something floating on water waves is moving up and down short distances and back and forth since the object floating would be absorbing some of the energy emitting from the waves.

A factor that causes ocean waves is the wind. As wind blows some of the energy from the wind is then transferred into the water making what we call waves.

Seismic waves are elastic waves that are usually produced by earthquakes.
