Makenna is 15 years old on a plane heading to San Jose with her dad. Dr. Parker is an ecologist. Her mom died in a car accident when she was 12. She has a sister in college named Alex. She is sad because her friends and her horse, Bender, are back in Michigan. She feels very alone.

There are lots of earthquakes, it is peaceful, and there are great jungles. C.R. is known for excellent hospitals, beaches and ecotourism. There is no dictator, it is a democracy and 96% people ("ticos") can read. Cecilio drives them to the ranch. She now lives in a tiny house with one bedroom, small bathroom, and a living room.

Margarita makes breakfast for Makenna; it is rice and beans. Makenna thinks its weird to have gallo pinto in the morning. Margarita's first husband and Ines' dad was Manuel, but he died in a car accident; Ines never met him. She married Ricardo when Ines was 2 years old and he became her father. Makenna can't imagine calling someone else "mom". Ines is 43, skinny, long hair, and a big nose.

Makenna and Ines cut mangos and other fruit for the birds. She did not have tropical fruit in Michigan. Cecilio ate some of the mangos and then Ines was mad, but they were joking. Cecilio said he needed to leave to go to his mom's house for her birthday. Family is really important in Costa Rica. They need a guard because there are bad people. Cecilio's dogs will help guard the birds. The aviary was large and the birds flew had great colors and feathers.

Makenna is with Ines in the aviary, they talk about how the birds get to the ranch. Either they are taken by MINAE or people can't look after them anymore. They talk about how she misses her friends and horse and she starts to cry. Ines comforts her. Makenna's job becomes to look after a baby bird who has a hurt wing and leg. She names the bird Mimi after her mom. Then Juan Carlos comes (Ines' boyfriend) and is very rude and grabs Ines.

Daughter of David Parker. Her mother died in a car crash. She did not want to go to Costa Rica because she was leaving her friends, horse, and phone. Shares a bond with Ines because each lost a parent. 15 years old.

Father of Makenna. His wife passed away in a car crash. Has new work in Costa Rica as an ecologist. He has 2 kids including Makenna. Has not re-married since his past wife. 44 years old.

Makenna goes to the big house for breakfast. She talks to Ricardo, who tells her more about the ranch, and how people rob the birds because money is the only important thing to them. They take eggs and babies from the jungle. Families and generations of bad people rob the birds. MINAE guards the birds so people don't steal them. They arrest criminals and then give the birds to the ranch. The birds stay there for 3 months then are released when they are ready to live in the jungle. Ricardo says that Makenna is already a "tica".

Makenna hears Juan Carlos talking on the phone. Juan Carlos is happy and smiling, she thinks he is handsome. She also thinks that he has another girlfriend. The window is broken in the baby bird house, everything is disorganized. It is really quiet, which is weird. Mimi is under the desk and is shaking. She goes to Inés who is crying because Juan Carlos has work problems. Makenna says the birds have disappeared. Cecilio comes and says that the birds were worth a lot of money. Inés is angry with him for saying that and says to call MINAE.

Makenna talks to her father about the robbery. He says the dogs didn't bark. Inés comes through the door and invites them if they want to go to Curu in Nicoya to see a place to let the birds free. They go, but her dad's face is red. Makenna remembers Juan Carlos saying something about Nicoya on the phone.

Dr. Parker drives a van with Makenna, Inés, and other people from the ranch to Curu. They stop to eat at a soda (Costa Rican restaurant). Makenna eats casado which has meat, rice, frijoles, fried bananas, and she drank horchata, she loved the dish. Inés and Makenna talk. She says that she is 43 and Juan Carlos is 32 years old. Makenna does not like Juan Carlos.

Dr. Parker and Makenna go for a walk in the jungle. They talk about Juan Carlos. Dr. Parker sees a rope in a tree and gets angry because people use ropes to look for bird eggs and steal them. He tries to call MINAE but can't get a signal. They walk a little more and he calls them. Makenna sees a red motorcycle like Juan Carlos'.

Inés and Makenna go to check out the motorcycle. Inés thinks Juan Carlos is in San Jose. They hear 3 voices and they run but the men grab them.

They get their hands tied behind chairs. Inés has a broken leg. She bites through Makenna's rope and she is free. She hides her hands because Cecilio comes and says he was the one who took the birds. He said he did it to get money for his family. Someone hits him on the head and Makenna runs away.

Juan Carlos works for MINAE and helped Inés get free. He was not actually her boyfriend. Dr. Parker hugs Inés and Makenna. They got 4 eggs from the bad guys. 3 of the men went to jail, but Cecilio didn't. The trial is in San Jose.

They let Mimi go. She now has beautiful colors and is not hurt. She has bigs wings. Both Inés and Mimi had a broken body part. They celebrate in a restaurant.

They went back for the trial; they all spoke to the judge. The three men went to jail for a long time. Cecilio testified against them and didn't go to jail. Makenna got a phone so she could message her friends. Inés and Dr. Parker kiss each other, and Alex is coming for Christmas. Makenna is grossed out when she sees them kissing. A person yells "pura vida".
