Missouri Compromise Of 1820

was passed by congress in 1820 to the large increase in U.S. territory as the result of the Louisiana Purchase. It provided that for every new free state that was added to the union, a slave state should be added.

In 1803, president Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase. It was acquired from France.

The land stretched from New Orleans all the way north to modern day Minnesota, northwest to modern day Montana, and southwest to modern day Arizona.

Provided that no more slaves be brought into Missouri and the gradual emancipation of children born to slave parents already in Misouri (shot down by the Senate) South saw this as a threat/ North was starting to get more populous and prosperous

any thing north of this was free, anything south would be slave.

Senator from Illinois who ran for president against Abraham Lincoln. Wrote the Kansas-Nebreaska Act and the Freeport Doctrine. He wanted the states to choose whether they were free or not.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´.

Enslaved AM bought by an army Dr. in Missouri, a slave state. His owner moved to IL and then WI which were both free states or territories. Later, family returned to Missouri and the Dr. died.

He sued for his freedom claiming that he should be free because he once lived on free soil. 11 years later, his case was taken to the supreme court.

Dred scott was still a slave because he was not a citizen being a slave and had no right to bring forth a lawsuit. He was property. Congress had nno power to prohibit slavery. The 36 degrees 30 north latitude was unconstitutional and so was popular sovereignty. Not even voters in the territory could vote on slavery because it was taking peoples property. In the end , the constitution protected slavery.

Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled that Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional because it prevented salve owners from exercising their property rights. Many

The republicans' sole reason for uniting belief was that the Kansas-Nebraska Act was wrong, the spread of slavery should be stopped, and in many cases, the Missouri Compromise needed to be re-instituted.
