Epistemology is a branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge and how it can be acquired. It is concerned with the questions: What is knowledge? How can we know something? Is knowledge possible, or are we limited to opinion and belief?At its core, epistemology investigates the criteria for justified belief. Epistemologists often examine different kinds of knowledge such as scientific knowledge (which relies on experimentation) versus philosophical knowledge (which relies on logical argumentation). They also discuss different kinds of truth-claims such as absolute truths (such as ‘2 + 2 = 4’) versus subjective truths (such as ‘this painting is beautiful’). Epistemology has been an important part of philosophy since ancient times and continues to be studied today by philosophers who strive to understand the nature of knowledge and our ability to acquire it. As technology advances and new challenges arise in science and ethics, epistemological debates become ever more relevant in our understanding of reality itself.
