Communism, a political and economic system which is based on the idea of a classless society with collective ownership of production, has been in existence since the early 19th century. It has been used by many countries as an alternative to capitalism and has been subject to much debate over the years. At its core, communism is based on the premise that all people should have equal access to resources within their society. This means that all people should have access to education, food, health care, housing and other basic needs regardless of their economic standing or social class. Proponents of communism believe that this type of system encourages collective action and cooperation between citizens for the betterment of society as a whole. In practice, however, communism can often lead to oppressive regimes where civil liberties are ignored and corruption exists. Many countries around the world have experimented with different forms of communism yet failed due to inefficient government bureaucracy or lack of economic opportunity for citizens. Furthermore, communist systems tend to be highly centralized so decision-making tends to be concentrated among a few individuals which can lead to abuse of power or stifling innovation due to lack of competition in certain industries or sectors. Despite its shortcomings however there is still much value in communist ideology such as its focus on equality and social justice as well as encouraging communal ownership over private property which allows more equitable distribution among citizens rather than only those who are wealthy or powerful enough to own it all themselves. Ultimately whether one supports communists ideals or not depends largely upon their own personal beliefs regarding how societies should be structured but it cannot be denied that such ideologies still exist today despite their mixed track record throughout history.
